THE LINER NORMANDIE
DEPARTURE FROM LE HAVRE PRESIDENT’S WIFE ON BOARD PARIS, May 29. The Normandie has left le Havre for America. Madame Le Brun was on board. She will visit Washington. She will be the first President’s wife to do so. A SUPERB SPECTACLE LONDON, May 30. (Received May 30, at 8.30 p.m.) The Normandie was a superb spectacle when she was off Spithead. She was ablaze with light, her illuminated name between the funnels standing out in nine feet letters. Searchlights picked her up from the shore. Aeroplanes roared overhead, and speed boats encircled her, while passengers in pleasure boats cheered. The Mayor of Southampton boarded the liner, which was at anchor for two hours, while passengers embarked and disembarked. Then, with three terrific blasts of her siren, she turned round, crowds at Portsmouth, Southsea, and Southampton watching until she disappeared in the open channel with 350 workmen still toiling to complete .her fitting before arrival in New York.
