JUBILEE AIR MAIL
THE TRANS-TASMAN FLIGHT GREAT INTEREST IN PROJECT (Pee United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 11. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s decision that two planes shall take part in next week’s jubilee trans-Tasman flight has been justified by the keen Interest in the project which has been taken by the people of the Commonwealth and New Zealand. This is shown, so far as the Dominion is concerned, by the large quantity of mail despatched by the Wanganella to Sydney to be carried back to New Zealand on the Southern Cross, one of the principal offices alone handling 3000 of these letters, many of which are intended to make the double crossing by air, and then to be returned by steamer to the sender in New Zealand as a souvenir of the complete flight. The mail to be carried on the return flight from New Zealand is sure to be of record proportions. This is the first opportunity of sending a letter by the all-air route from New Zealand to Britain and to countries served by the Australian-England airways (including the Dutch East Indies, Singapore, and the Federated Malay States, Hongkong, Ceylon, India, Iraq, Palestine, Egypt, South Africa, and the Continent of Europe). There has been a very heavy demand for the special first cover envelopes, and the Post Office, to give New Zealanders an opportunity of securing these souvenirs of an historic flight, has arranged with the New Zealand High Commissioner that letters addressed in care of him will be posted back by the ordinary mail route to any address written on the back of the envelope, the cost of this service being 2d prepaid in New Zealand stamps. AUSTRALIAN ARRANGEMENTS LETTER ADDRESSED TO THE KING SYDNEY, May 12. (Received May 12, at 6.30 p.m.) On the jubilee air mail flight to New Zealand and back Sir Charles Kingsford Smith will carry a letter addressed to the King at Buckingham Palace. The stamps on the envelopes will include the special Australian jubilee stamp depicting his Majesty mounted on a charger. The stamps'.will be postmarked “ Australia-New Zealand.” His Majesty is a keen philatelist. CAPTAIN TAYLOR’S CO-PILOT FLYING-OFFICER SHIEL SELECTED SYDNEY, May 12. (Received May 13, at 0.40 a.m.) Flying-officer B. Shiel will be the copilot with Captain P. G. Taylor in the Faith of Australia on the jubilee air mail flight.
