BALCLUTHA High School Election The postal vote for the election of three parents’ representatives on the South Otago High School Board of Governors resulted in the re-election of Messrs Lothian, Malcolm, and Roy. Borough Election The official count of the votes cast in the recent borough election was made on Saturday, but, as was expected, the figures, which were altered slightly in some instances, did not affect the result as announced on polling day. In the case of the six defeated candidates for the council the recount placed Mr L. Stewart at the top with 367 votes in place of Mr S. V. White (364). The 599 votes polled by Mr D. M. Henderson, who topped the poll, was a record vote for Balclutha. Otanomomo River Board The poll for the election of five members of the Otanomomo River and Drainage Board resulted: —Walter Stiven 53, Thomas H. Dale 49, William Telford 48, Peter Dippie 41. C. M. Murdoch 36, H. G. Cuthbertson 23.

Chrysanthemum Show A chrysanthemum and winter show will be held in the Balclutha Presbyterian Sunday School Hall next Friday. Last year a similar show was held, and although a first attempt, it proved extremely successful. This year, baking and knitting competitions have been added to the programme, and an even bettor response is expected. Rugby Football

Clutha I played Star on the Stirling ground on Saturday, Star winning a wellfought game by 13 points to 6 points. The only Rugby football match at Balclutha was the Third Grade fixture Owaka v. Clutha. Owaka was heavier than its opponents, and seemed to have a bettei knowledge of the game. Although having only 13 men against a full 15, the visitors dominated the play even more than the scores indicated. Owaka won by 6 points to 3 points. E. Wright and M. M‘Ava scored tries for the visitors in the first spell. In the seend spell D. Randle (Clutha) kicked a penalty goal, the only score made in the spell. Mr B. Green was the referee. Obituary Mr Gerald H. B. Hutchins, who died at his residence, Owaka. on Friday, at the age of 58 years, was the eldest sou of Mr G, W. Hutchins, the first chemist in Balclutha and a leading figure in the life of the community in the early days. Mr Gerald Hutchins followed in the footsteps of his father as a chemist, and was in business first in Kaitangata, and then at Riverton and Orepuki. He went to Owaka about 20 years ago. He was of a genial nature and had many friends. His chief sport was angling, at which he was an expert, and he also at one time participated in game shooting. He is survived by a widow, but there is no family.
