SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.
PORT CHALMERS—May 10th. The ship Severn, from London, is signalled as having arrived at the Heads. She is reported as having sailed on :he 6th of February, and has consequently made a passage of 94 days. Will probably tow up on Wednesday. The Port has been made busy during the day by the Omeo discharging alongside the Jetty a large number of sheep and horses. It is a seven clays' wonder when a vessel comes alongside the Port Chalmers jetty. It is a wonder, because it necessarily rarely happens; and, whan it does happen, people look for being dragged away or knocked down. It is a wonder how restless horses are landed on such a worthless wharf; and it is a wonder that half the foot passengers to and from the steamers are not killed on the spot or seriously injured. . . .
We regret to learn that the Molyneux, with its accustomed fickleness, has again risen several feet, greatly to the disgust of the numerous diggers, who have so solicitously watched the rise and fall of the waters. At the same time hopes are indulged in that the cold dry weather which has set in will result in a fall of the water level of a more permanent nature than has occurred for some timo. With reference to the financial embarrassment of the Southland Government, the " Southland News" of the Oth says:—" The mystery is still maintained as to the financial position of the province, and the people have not even the satisfaction of knowing that the Government are taking, or contemplating, any effective measure for securing relief from an embarrassment, the existence of which is the only patent fact iu the situation." A tea meeting was held at the Dunstan on Friday evening last in aid of the funds of the Church of England, the building having undergone a great renovation lately; it has been floored, lined with skirting boards, and a ceiling has been added as well as extra sitting accommodation, and everything that will tend to the comfort of the congregation during the coming cold winter months has been done. ...
Our Dunstan correspondent states that the excitement concerning the new diggings in Marlborough is increasing in the Dunstan District, and a very large number of miners from all quarters are flocking to Dunedin en route for Picton.
The produce of the New South Wales gold fields for the past four months was 113,253 ozs, equal to 28,3131 ozs per month.
