OTAGO SUNK OFF TASMANIAN COAST. With the destruction of tho Otago, which was recently scuttled off the Tasmanlan coast, a notable link with literature has disappeared. The Otago was the barque on which Joseph Conrad held his first command. It was his experiences on the Otago that started him on a writing career. Conrad left her to join the Torrens, on board which he met John Galsworthy, who read his manuscripts and advised him to devote himself to literature. The Otago was a small Iron barque weighing only 345 tons, and was built in 1870. She has some excellent passages to her credit, one of the most remarkable being a voyage from Liverpool to Port Chalmers, which occupied only 85 days from land to land. At this time the Otago was commanded by Captain Cameron. On another occasion she left Liverpool on April 16, taking her final departure from land on April 22, and ran down her easting on a general parallel of 46deg. with thick, cold weather. On July 15 Tasmania was sighted, and shortly afterwards a terrific cyclone was encountered. The South Cape of Stewart Island was made on July 19, and Port Chalmers on July 25. The Otago had so far outlived her usefulness that she was not worth even selling to the shopbreakers, so she was taken out to sea and sunk.
