A WORKMAN'S FIND TIN OF SOVEREIGNS SYDNEY, May 8. (Received May 8, at 11 p.m.) While a gang of workmen were excavating beneath an old iron fence in Centennial Park to-day one man drove a pick into a rusty tin, scattering at least 40 sovereigns of the 1000 period. His exclamation of joy brought his mates to the scene and all work was held up while the locality was scoured for coins.
TRADE COMMISSIONERS CANBERRA, May 8. (Received May 8, at 11 p.m.) The Cabinet to-day appointed Mr C. E. Critchley as Australian Trade Commissioner at Batavia, Netherlands East Indies. Mr Critchley has been assistant Trade Commissioner in Canada for six years. The Cabinet will announce similar appointments for Tokio and Shanghai within a few days. The Minister for Customs (Mr T. W. White) will visit New Zealand at the end of this month to pursue trade talks.
