Advance Bookings at Begg’s. “PLAIN BILL'S DILEMMA” Despite the fact that it is not my custom to reply to correspondents who indulge in personalities under shelter of a noin (le plume, and despite the fact that “ Plain Bill’s ” more recent letters have been characterised by less abuse and more subtlety of innuendo, it is desirable that one should refresh the facts in the memories of your readers. v They are that "Plain Bill” has written, over his nom de plume, a series of letters characterised by innuendoes, personalities, and sometimes insults. In these letters he has sought from me a reply to his question. I have objected, and I do object, to this kind of tactics, especially when they are indulged in by one whose idea of sportsmanship prompts him to make his attacks under the shelter of anonymity. I have informed " Plain Bill ” before, and I do so again, that when he comes out into the open and signs his name 1 will immediately answer his question. His consistent failure to do so prompts one to ask, Does he really desire an answer or is he merely engaged in propaganda? He first came to light on the eve of the Labour Party selection ballot for Dunedin West, and now, after a period of hibernation, he awakens on the eve of the civic election. Will he again go into cold storage until the eve of the parliamentary election? Personally, as T said before, I am thoroughly enjoying “ Plain Bill’s ” dilemma. He evidently thinks that lie has a good point, but because his name at the bottom of his letter would probably make the position even more humorous he finds himself in a quandary. I suggest that one of his associates might be able to help him out. When I was out the other afternoon I witnessed an episode that reminded me of “ Plain Bill ” and his refusal to avail himself of what is freely offered. I saw a nurse endeavouring to teach good manners to a spoilt boy.. The small boy desired a piece of cake, and the nurse, while offering it to him, retained her grip upon it until little Willie said, "Thank you.” Little Billy ■ screamed and performed, spat at the nurse, endeavoured to kick her, and eventually rolled on the ground in his rage. The one thing he would not do was say “ Thank you " and receive his cake. Similarly, my Billy will receive his cake in the form of my answer just as soon as he develops the courtesy and the courage necessary to enable him to come out o i the shades of darkness and sign his name. In the meantime I shall continue" to enjoy his dilemma and look expectantly for his repeated appearance between now and November. D. G. M'MILLAN. Roslyn, May 6.
