The Prince of Wales’s flower farms in the Scilly Islands have been sending large quantities of blooms to London. The harvest was earlier than usual this year. One week nearly 0000 boxes were despatched from the islands, containing mainly So! d’Or daffodils and Scilly White narcissi. Two-thirds of those were taken by Covent Garden, the remainder going to northern towns, where there is an increasing demand for flowers. The inhabited islands of Scilly. which form part of the Duchy of Cornwall estate, cover 3500 acres, 3000 of which are under cultivation., A fair-sized farm is some 30 acres in extent, but there are a large number of between 10 and 20 acres. There are about 100 flower farmers in the islands, holding their laud on annua) tenancy.
