OBITUARY

JOHN EDWIN PALMER The death occurred recently at his residence, 130 Carroll street, of Mr John Edwin Palmer, who represented a link with the very early days of Otago and was himself numbered among the pioneer settlers. His father arrived in the province as a whaler about 1832, and later settled at Henley. John struck out early to make a way for himself, and at the age of 16 he was employed on the railway service between Bluff and Invercargill. During the course of a very full life, he engaged in many pursuits, and his tales of earlier days were highly interesting. Goldminer, farmer, butcher, bushraan, mill manager, shearer, were only some of the activities in which he was engaged, while many will remember his proficiency in various forms of sport —including wrestling, boxing and vaulting.
