THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
Reports of meetings of branches are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be assured. The Seacliff Women’s Institute held its second meeting last month. Mrs Nicolson gave a demonstration of wool grafting. The hostesses were Mesdames Leckie, Casterley, and Matheson. Competitions were won by Mrs Stewart and Miss Lewis. The roll call was “My birthplace,” and the motto “The memory of blessings furnishes a remedy for the blues.”
The first meeting of the Milton Institute was presided over by Mrs J. Gray. The motto, “ Real success cannot be achieved without hard work” was followed by the roll call “ My contribution to the institute bay.” Mrs J. Sinclair was elected as. a member on the Otago Executive. An “ apron and dust cap ” parade was held as the competition, Miss Watt being the winner, with Mrs T. Scott second. Mrs Boyd, of Lovell’s Flat, gave a demonstration on the making of a box ottoman. The hostesses were Mesdames Falconer, Hay, Kennard, M'Elrea, and Sinclair.
The Kaka Point Women’s Institute met in the hall on Wednesday, Mrs Rein presiding. The roll call was “ The oldest thing I have, and bring it.” The motto for the month was “ Life is a camera, look pleasant.” A competition for the best; worked duehesse sot was won by Mrs Thurlov, with Miss L. Tilson second, and Mrs D. M'Kechnie third. The hostesses wore Mrs Crooks and the Misses Barber.
The third birthday party of the ISaseby Women’s Institute was held on April 29. Husbands were invited. The motto for the evening was, “ Woman is a born civiliser; whenever possible she ought to be side by side with man, otherwise he runs down at the heel and becomes second ejass generally.” The roll call was “ What husbands should do in the house.” Most of the evening was spent in a social sing, say, or pay, closing with supper and the cutting of the birthday cake.
