SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.
PORT CHALMERS—Mat 6th. The barque Capriolani was towed to the anchorage in the forenoon. She has made a very good passage of only 86 days from England, She left London on the 29th January, and Land’s End on 4th February; . . , and sighted Stewart’s Island at 2 a.m. on . 29th April, passing between the island and the Traps. Has since been baffled off the coast, and driven to northward by strong gales. In addition to her cargo for this port, she brings 200 tons flint and other freight for China,, whither she proceeds on discharging here. ... The ship Rangoon, from New York, got inside on Thursday evening, and anchored off the Maori Kaik, where she got driven on the sandbank during the violent squall s from the N.W., which prevailed in the forenoon. Signals for assistance were made at the Heads, and the steamer Geelong proceeded down, towed her off, and has since brought her to the anchorage. . The “Age” of the 29th ultimo gives the following account of the death of an aboriginal chief;—“The old chief Derrimut died at the Benevolent Asylum on Wednesday last. Derrimut was the last chief of those tribes of aborigines who were encamped in the neighborhood of the Yarra when Mr Fawkner and the first settlers arrived here. It will be remembered that Derrimut saved the first settlers from being massacred by the blacks, as he gave them timely warning of the attack.” Alluding to the large number of kangaroos which infest that district, the “ Belfast Gazette ” (Victoria) says:“Between the latter end of 1862 and the beginning of the present year, a period of little more than fifteen months, Messrs R. Goldsbrough and Co.’s Belfast House has sent away for shipment to London, upon various persons’ account, between 29,000 and 30,000 kangaroo skins, taken principally from the stations of Messrs H. Phillips and Messrs Macknight and Irvine. Further quantities are still coming forward for shipment. As it is estimated that two kangaroos will consume and spoil as much grass as would support three healthy sheep, it would seem that the settlers mentioned above have been prevented from increasing their stock, and have lost the use of the stations, by as'many as 45,000 sheep. There seftms, notwithstanding, to be but little diminution in the - neighborhood of Dunmore and Tarrone in the number of these destructive animals.” EXECUTION OF THE FLOWERY LAND PIRATES. John Lyons, Francisco Blanco, Ambrosio olios Lopez, alias Joseph Chancess, were executed at Newgate on the 22pd February. ...
