INTRUDER IN SHOPS
TRACED BY SCRAP OF PAPER POLICE COURT SEQUEL. \ scrap of paper carelessly left led to the arrest of the man responsible for attempted safe-blowing aud theft at Waverley recently. The story (states a New Plymouth correspondent) was told bv Detective J. Murray, of Wanganui, and other witnesses in the Waverley Police Court, when Edgar Petersen pleaded guilty and was committed to the gupremc Court at Wellington for senPetersen broke into a store and a confectionery shop at Waverley. _ In the ' store he plugged the keyhole in a safe 1 with gelignite, which he packed soap. The soap was wrapped in greaseproof paper, which he tore in halves, lne safe resisted the explosive, so Petersen then broke into Thomas's shop and stole ten shillings. , I Detective Murray searched Petersen s room in a boarding house and found a piece of grease-proof paper which matched the scrap found in the shop. Petersen had left, and some days later he was arrested at It was stated that a search revealed in Petersen's bag a stick of gelignite and scraps of soap. Strapped to his leg under his clothing were two blades of hacksaws used for cutting steel.
