Strain, of Invercargill, and Alf H Harris, delegates to the annual meeting of the New Zealand, Rugby Union, returned south on Saturday. Mr Douglas M.Spedding will return, this morning. The secretary of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, Mr J. Roy Smith, has been granted leave of absence to make a business trip to Australia. He will leave Christchurch on May 16, and will visit both Sydney and Melbourne. Mr J. Caugliley, a former Director of Education, has announced his candidature in the interests of the Democratic Party for the Kaipara electorate, which is at-present represented by the Minister of Finance (Mr J-J&- Coates). . Congratulations to Mr Andrew Martin, of Gore, on the recent celebration of his golden wedding were expressed by the chairman of the Southland County Council (Mr L. A. Niederer) at a meeting of the council last week. Mr Martin, he mentioned; had until recently regularly attended the council meetings, which he had reported for the Mataura Ensign for well over 40 years. Members joined in wishing Mr Martin many years of health and happiness. Mr Noel Laver, who has been manager of Messrs John Chambers and Son, Ltd, in Christchurch for the past 25 years, has been appointed South Island supervisor nf his firm. He is the first to hold this position. Mr Laver took charge of the Christchurch branch of his firm in 1910. About seven vears ago he was appointed a director. The head office of the firm in New Zealand is at Auckland, but Mr Laver will continue to make Christchurch i his headquarters.. , The Rev E. 0. Blamires, secretary lor the past seven years of the New Zealand Bible-in-Schools League, a post which hitherto he has combined with pastoral duties, has now accepted a full-time appointment as organising secretary of the league, with headquarters in Wellington.
