ENGLAND IMPORTS MORE NAILS
TO THE EDITOE Sir, —A sidelight on the difficulties of British industry is given by the Ironmonger (London), which reveals, that, in spite of a high protective tariff,. the importation of wire nails into Great Britain is still increasing. , In 1933 the total importation was 19,178 tons; but this rose to 23,943 tons last year. Moreover, the British nail manufacturers them/ selves, it appears, are obliged to use more and more foieign material to enable them to compete at all. The importation of foreign steel rods by British industry increased last year to 84,957 tons, as compared with 41,546 tons in 1933. The tariff in Great Britain itself ranges from £5 to, £6 per ton; and it ie interesting to compare this with the New Zealand tariff (8.P.) of only £2 per ton.—l am, etc., A. E. Mandeb, New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation. Wellington, May 2. |.. - -
