HARRIERS

ST. PATRICK'S. An attendance of 25 members of the St. Patrick's Club-turned out from the Holy Name Church. Two packs were formed, the slow under the whistle of Captain D. Scott and the fast under Deputy Captain N. Greaney. The slow pack ran over the top (of Stony, thence clown on to the Port Chalmers road, which was followed to the Ravensbourne railway station, where the pack turned for home. The run home was won by ( D. Scott, with Hall, Conroy, and Robertson next. Crowe, Henaghan, and Ryan also ran well. The fast pack ran down the Port Chalmers road to St. Leonards, thence up the hill to District road. At this point a cross-country course was followed over to Opoho, from where the trail led direct to the Holy Name Church, those prominent being W. Hannan, N. Hall, 0. R. Higgins, W. Cox, and E. M'Lachlan. NORTHERN. Northern ran from the schoolroom of the Roslyn Methodist Church under the whistles of Captain G. Armishaw and Deputy Captain D. Fincham. An excellent pack, led by the captain (G. Armishaw), followed the North Taieri road, past the Wakari sub-station in the direction of Ashburn Hall. A fast pace was held to Spiers's road, the steep grade of which was negotiated to the short cut, which proved rather heavy going, due to the slippery nature of the track. The Flagstaff road was next encountered, and was followed to the Long Ridge road, which was traversed for a short distance, a turn being made along a rough trail through the paddocks atr the side of the road back towards Flagstaff. From this point the trail led along a muddy and rocky track skirting the side of Flagstaff, a fast pace being maintained to the new sub-station. At this stage one ot the members, I. Chapman, had the misfortune to injure his knee by a heavy fall. Owing to the painful nature of his injury, he was accompanied during the remainder of the journey by the deputy captain (D. Fincham). The whistle for the run home was given at the new sub-station, when the pace increased considerably.- Four or five drew out from the remainder of the pack along the<> North Taieri road, and at the Wakari sub-station B. Haugh and N. R. Jefferson were leading the field. 'The former gradually clapped on the pajce and increased his distance by a few yards to win by a comfortable margin from Jefferson. B. M'Kenzie was a close third. A pleasing feature was the performance of G. Bridges, C. Knox, and A. Fraser- 1 - all new members of the club —who finished fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.

The Civil Service Harriers held their annual One Mile Postal Cup Race during the half time spell at Carisbrook. The ground was very soft from the recent rains and a southerly wind made conditions a little worse. The starter (Mr J. Hoy) despatched a large field of 44 starters. The race was a very interesting one, and in the last lap half a dozen men had excellent chances of victory and provided a most exciting finish. This year's winner, R. S. Anderson, was second in the same race last year. He ran a very well-judged race and was particularly strong over the latter stages. At the end of the first lap the leaders were Sprackett, Holley and Herbison. The leaders at the end of the second lap were Sprackett, Mason and M'Kersey. The scratch man, L. C. M'Lachlan, was coming along nicely, and was beginning to thread his way through the field. At the bell Mason was in the lead from Sprackett and SkimW, with M'Lachlan and Barnes coming' through well. Mason still led at the 220 yd mark, with R: Anderson and M. Mackinnon closing up the gap. Mackinnon and D. .Mason, and in a stirring finish the throe men' held to- their positions', Anderson being the winner by .three yards, with Mason a similar distance back, third. From the school the pack went up College street, and into Fairplay street, which was followed to Riselaw road. At this point the pack turned to the paddocks, where some good level running was indulged in till the Green Island road was reached. After this road had been followed for about two miles against a cold southerly wind, it started to rain, and it was decided to return to the school. Petersen, off 50 yards, set a steady pace over the first half mile, and was 15 yards clear from G. Edwards at the half-mile mark,, with V. Trewern (30yds) and L. *Maw (35yds) close up, a bunch consisting of Strachan (25yds), Leckie (30yds), Murray (scr), and Harding (10yds) a little further back. Lack of training began to tell over the final half mile, and the fitter men came through the field. Murray (scr) was running well, and steadily forged to the front, closely followed by Strachan (25yds). Petersen was losing his dash, but was running doggedly, with Maw, who had displaced Trewern, and Edwards running steadily a few yards further back. Entering the straight Murray held a five yards lead from Strachan, with Petersen 10 yards back. Murray won easing up after running -a soundly-judged race, and Strachan finished with a final effort 10 yards back, Petersen hanging on determinedly to gain third placing 15 yards away and five'yards clear of Maw.
