DOG SAVES TWO LIVES
PIG-HUNTING ADVENTURES "RETIREMENT " sFROM HUNTING. A pig-hunting dog with a remarkable record, including the saving of two HVes, has been retired from hunting, as he is now not so, swift of foot and too/much "one of the family" ior his owners to risk him being killed., The dOg (states a New Plymouth correspondent) is Tiger, owned by Messrs K. M. Meuli and E. H. Meuli., of New Plymouth. Tiger's owners are proud of their nine-year-old veteran, who has helped in the capture of over 2000 pigs. Tiger saved Mr E. Meuli from almost certain . death at Pukearuhe in 1930. A party of three men and three dogs eet off in pursuit of a large boar, cornering hitta after a long chase. The pig stood off the dogs and then made for/ Mr K. Meuli, who was chased round and round a' nikau palm. A companion with a gun could not use it, as Mr Meuli was in the line of fire. The pig then made a rush at Mr E. Meuli,-who leaped into the air, but was caught in some bush lawyer, and fell flat on his back. Tiger flew at the pig with a roar, pulling hi in up within a foot of Mr Meuli's face. The dog held like a vice until the pig *va« despatched., ; On another occasion, at Uruti, a pursued pig jumped over a cliff into water and mud. Dogs followed, and soon the pig was securely, held. The pig lay so quiet, however, that the dogs momentarily loossened their holds, and the animal suddenly reared in the air and plunged its tusk twice into Mr Mculi's chest just above his heart, knocking him into a stream. Mr Meuli was further attacked by the pig, but Tiger sprang in, and tore the pig's head to one side, giving the man a chance to cf-Ldpe.
