(Continued) • MRS NORAH ROSS Mrs Norah Ross was trained as a nurse in Edinburgh and served in her professional capacity in both London and Glasgow. She was a sister and an act-ing-matron with the British forces during' the war. Later she transferred as a nurse in the French service, and was decorated for her work there with the Croix de Guerre, with the palm and two stars. She married Mr W. A. Ross in London and came to Dunedin with her husband 15 years ago. In the intervening years Mrs Ross has interested herself in a number of public causes. She is a justice of the peace. At one time she held the post of _ president of the Home Economics Association Council, and among the positions which she holds at the present time are those of president of the City Rest Room Committee and president of the Mothers’ League. She is a member of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association,, of the Trained Nurses’ Association of New Zealand, and of the Young Women’s Christian Association, in addition to being a member of the committee of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and president of the Citizens’ Day Nursery Committee.

WILLIAM E. S. KNIGHT Mr W. E. S. Knight, who was born in England in 1858, arrived in Dunedin with his parents in 1862, and proceeded immediately to Waitahuna Gully, where he attended a day school. Later he removed to Millers Flat and in 1864 to Waipori, where most of his early life was spent. Mr .Knight, served for < a number of years on the school committee. and on one occasion, when the householders failed to elect a committee, he was appointed commissioner. For six years he was a. member of the Tuapeka County Council, and was chairman for one term. Mr Knight was also one of the original members of the Deep Stream Licensing Committee, which was constituted in 1883. He represented Tuapeka on the old Charitable Aid Board and was elected by the local bodies as. trustee of the old Benevolent Institution. Mr. Knight , has been a member of the Otago Hospital Board since its inception in 1910 and’has occupied the position of chairman for the past 18 years. He has been elected to the position each time without opposition, and in that respect has achieved a record for New Zealand so far as the boards in the chief centres are concerned. He is also chairman of the Dempsey trustees, an organisation which exists for the relief of needy persons who have been patients of the Dunedip Hospital.

MacArthur was born in Lydbury North, Shropshire, and was educated in the county council school there. She spent some years in Lancashire, and there interested herself in the work of. the local ambulance brigade and as a member of the committee for the aftercare- of tuberculosis patients in the County of Lancashire. Mrs MacArthur was for four years a member of the V.A.D. during the war, serving in Winwick Hospital, Warrington, where she came in contact with the troops from all parts of the Empire. She was particularly- active during this time as Ah organiser of entertainment for the men who were convalescent. Since coming to Dunedin 14 years, ago, she has interested herself in the welfare of the old people in, the Talboya Home. Last Christmas Mrs. MacArthur acted as organiser for the . Mayor’s Christmas party for the children of the unemployed.

FRANCES MAY DON Mrs F. M. Don ] was born at Dunedin and was educated at the Forbufy School, King -Edward Technical College, and Brown's Commercial College. She follows the occupation of clerk. She is at present a member of the executive of the Otago Labour Representation Council, and for eight years acted, as treasurer of the South Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, of which she is still an active member. .During the parliamentary election campaign of 1931, she was chief organiser for Mr F. Jouca, M.P.

Dove received his education at the Macandrew Road School, and is the president of the school's Ex-pupils’ Association. He has been a keen worker in the friendly society movement for the/ past 32 years, and was grand presi-dent-'of the United Ancient Order of Druids from 1918 till 1920. He is still secretary of one of the branches of the Order, and at the present time is president of the United Friendly Societies’ Dispensary. He entered public life in 1913, when he was elected to the St. Kilda Borough Council; He was‘returned as Mayor for the term 1921-23, and was subsequently re-elected to the council led by Mr Charles Todd, for whom he acted as Deputy Mayor. He served for two years on the Drainage Board, and was the representative for the city and St. Kilda on the Ocean Beach Domain Board for eight years. Mr Dove was elected a member of the Hospital Board in J 919, and has been chairman of the Works Committee for a number of years, while he also represents the board on the University Council. He is a trustee of the Dunedin Savings Bank, having been appointed some four or five years ago. At the recent conference of the New Zealand Justices of the Peace he was elected president of the federation.
