Football The Country Football Club recently held its annual meeting at Lower Shotover, and it was refreshing to see the keen interest taken in the sport and in the affairs of the club. This was reflected in an attendance of close on 25 members, Mr Angus Smith presiding. Further evidence of the enthusiasm of members was afforded in the very healthy state of the finances disclosed in the balance sheet. The receipts during the year amount to £2O 0s 6d, which, with a credit balance for the previous year, gave the club the sum of £36 6s 7d to work on for the season. The expenditure amounted to £25 odd, but a good proportion of this was accounted for in non-annual costs such as £7 10s for;the purchase of jerseys, and f 6 15s for socks. The outgoing committee leave a credit balance of £ll 3s 2d, which was considered very satisfactory.—The report congratulated the junior section of the club on winning the cup at the seven-a-side tournament on June 4, and on being runnersup in the sub-union's competition. Office-bearers were elected as follows: — Patrons—Messrs P. Reid, D. Jardine, and H. Ross (re-elected); president, Mr James M'Lean (re-elected); secretary, Mr W. A. M'Lean; and auditor, Mr D. H. Cockburn (both re-elected); captains, J. Talbot (senior), deputy Captain Jardine; I. Brown (junior), deputy T. M'lntyre; delegates to sub-union, Messrs R. N. Grant and S. Brown; referees recommended, Messrs D. Wheeler and S. Brown. Subscriptions were fixed at 5s for hon. members, 3s for seniors, and Is 6d for juniors. Resuscitation of Glenorchy Club A meeting of Glenorchy enthusiasts in the Rugby game was held last week, and it was decided to resuscitate the club and affiliate with the Wakatipu Subunion. Mr S. Knowles was elected president and Mr J. Forbes secretary and treasurer. Mr P. W. J. Cockerill was appointed delegate on the sub-union. Wakatipu Sub-union The annual meeting of the Wakatipu District Football Sub-union was held last week. Delegates from the Queenstown, Arrowtown, and Country Clubs were present. Mr W. Warring, president, was in the chair. The annual report showed that the subunion was in a good financial position, the credit balance being £27 13s 2d. Commenting on the games of last season, the report noted that the football was not up to the usual standard, and that some of the players did not display a great deal of enthusiasm in the game. Notwithstanding this, some good play was noticeable in the Senior Grade. The winners of last year's competitions were as follows: —Seniors, Arrowtown; Juniors, Arrowtown; Teacher's Cup, Arrowtown; Jopp Cup (schools), Arrow-Lower Shotover Combined; schools seven-a-side matches, Queenstown Public School. The usual scven-a-side tournament was held on the King's birthday. Thanks were accorded Mr W. Baird, Invercargill, for his services as delegate on the Southland Rugby Football Union, Mr R. T. Fuller (selector), the Emergency Committee, and others. Before proceeding with the election of office-bearers, the meeting recorded its sympathy with Mr W. Baird, who recently lost his wife. The following were elected to office for the ensuine season:—President, Mr W. Warring; vice-president, Mr W. H. •Tames; secretary. Mr G. Corson, vice I'. W. J. Cockerill (resigned); auditor, R. J. Fuller: delegate on S.R.F.U., Mr \V. Baird; Emergency Committee —Messrs W. H. James, R. N. Grant, and J. W. Miller; Appointment Board —the president, C. M. Inglis, and W. H. James. It was decided that the cup matches

commence on May 4, and a draw was made for the first round. It was moved and seconded that the age limit rule pertaining to juniors he strictly enforced next season. Last season a number of seniors played in the junior grade, and it was considered very unfair that youths leaving school should be pitted against men over the age of 21 years. It was agreed to hold the usual seven-a-side tournament on the King's Birthday. The question of sending a team to lnvercargiil for Country Day matches was discussed, .but the matter was held in abeyance, mainly on the ground of want of finance.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring secretary, Mr P. W. J. Cockerill, who, it was considered, proved the most efficient official the sub-union ever had.

Valedictory Miss Mabel Barnett, a popular Arrowtown girl, has been the guest of honour at two public gatherings during the week in view of her impending departure from the district and subsequent marriage. In the Athenajum Hall she was entertained by Mrs W. H. James at a large gathering of her friends. The evening was devoted to cards and dancing, and a very happy, bright time was spent. A great variety of gifts was showered upon Miss Barnett, and several speeches in felicitous vein were made by representative citizens present. Vocal items were contributed by Miss Jean Reid, Messrs J. J. M'Neill, and W. H. James, and vocal quartets were rendered by Messrs W. H. James, Reg. Romans, J. J. M'Neill, and C. Reid. Mrs J. W. Reed gave a "kitchen" evening in Miss Barnett'a honour in Mrs Johnston's hall, when guests assembled from all parte of the surrounding district. They were entertained in many ways popular with young people, as evidence of the goodwill towards Miss Barnett was symbolised in a large number of gifts suitable for the setting up of housekeeping. Musical items were rendered by Mrs A. *V. Meller, Miss Jean Reid, Messrs James Snell, W. H. James and Cliff Simms. Mr Steve Reid, who was closely identified with football at Arrowtown last season, and who has now taken his departure to Hillend, was presented by fellow-members of the Arrowtown Club with a fountain pen and a wallet. Mr G. H. Romans (president) made the presentation, and expressed the general regret felt at Mr Reid's impending removal from the district. Women's Division A monthly meeting of the Arrowtown Branch of the Women's Division was held on Saturday afternoon in the public school, room, Mrs D. H. Cockburn presiding. The main item was the giving of consideration to a letter from Miss M'Millan, organiser of the Association of Country Education, containing a proposal for the formation of a junior home-making club for girls between the ages of 15 and 25 years. The idea was enthusiastically received, and it was decided to invite the young girls of the district to attend the next meeting of the division in order to discuss steps leading up to the formation of such a club. The roll call on Saturday was a recipe for a meatless dish, many helpful ajjd original hints being given. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs Alex Hamilton, Mrs James and Mrs J. Butel.

Bowling The Wakatipu Bowling Club brought the season to a close last week owing to the necessity for top-dressing the green. The winners of the various competitions during the season were:—Championship Singles, Mr J. B. Perks; Championship Doubles. Messrs J. W. Miller and R. Mills; Club Doubles (handicap), Messrs A. Scheib and R. J. Fuller. R. L. Fletcher has won the Scoullar Cup presented_ for the Handicap Singles Competition in connection with the Arrowtown Club. Mr Fletcher is a firstvear player. Mr E. J. Saunders was runner-up. Last year he was also in second place in the same competition. A letter has been received by the Queenstown Borough Council from Mr Adam Hamilton in reply to its communication urging on the Tourist Department the urgent necessity of laying down a second bowling green in the park. Mr Hamilton points out that while allowing that unemployed labour might be used in the undertaking the £SO promised by the Queenstown Citizens' Carnival Committee would not by any means cover the cost, and a larger amount would have to be met out of Government funds. The revenue from bowls for the year 1933-34 was £IOO Bs, and the cost of maintaining the green and other departmental facili-

ties in the Domain was £4BB (excluding the salary of the Government Tourist agent). However, he would be glad to give the matter further consideration —on hearing what subsidy the council could give in addition to the £SO available from the Carnival Association.—The council is informing the Minister that it has no power to grant any subsidy from its funds, but that it would be prepared to give some assistance in the way of supervision. General A very enjoyable dance in aid of the funds of the Lower Shotover Public Hall was held on Friday evening. The attendance, although not quite so large as usual, was regarded as very satisfactory. Socially, it was a great success. The music was supplied by Reg. Roman's orchestra. The combined hotel staffs of the town intend holding a dance in the Garrison Hall on Wednesday of next week in aid of the Queenstown Fire Brigade funds. The new Catholic Presbytery, which has been in course of construction tor some months, will be officially opened by his Lordship Bishop Whyte, of Dunedin, on Sunday next. The public has been invited to attend the ceremony. The new presbytery is an iniposing structure, of the bungalow type, and fashioned on modern lines. It is a great credit to the contractors, Messrs Scott and Lindsay, to the Catholic community, and the town generally. Personal The Rev. Father J. Fitzgibbon is th« guest of his brother, Mr T. A. Fitzgibbon, at Arrow Junction. Dr and Mrs Hosking, of New Guinea, have been spending a week in Queenstown. Mr and Mrs Edward Monson left here on Monday on their way to Great Britain, where they will spend some months. They sail from Sydney early next month on the Balranald. Mr and Mrs Thomas Reid, Dunedin, are visiting relatives in this district. Mrs Curtis is making a short visit to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs T. W. Collins, ofKurow, have come to Queenstown on a visit to Mr Collins's parents. Mr R. D. Newth, district manager Public Trust, Invercargill, arrived here on Monday night. Mr and Mrs E. J. Thomson has gone to Invercargill on a visit to relatives. Miss P. Kenny, Hyde, and Miss Margaret Phelan, Timaru, have been making a stay at Arthur's Point. Mrs W. H. Overton and her mother, Mr e Goddard (Christchurch), returned on Monday night from a short visit to Invercargill.
