The boy was suffering from infantile paralysis. He was imable to breathe. For seven months the " lung " breathed for him till his own lungs were strong enough to function. The apparatus is made by Messrs Siebe, Gorman and Co., makers of the famous Davit, submarine escape apparatus. Five British hospitnL has installed it. The patient is placed in a larga sealed chamber, with his head ouUide. .-\ vacuum is created in the chamner, and this litis with air and then expels it. An electric motor works the " lung" at any speed to suit the patient, who can eat and sleep while in the chamber.
