SWIMMING

PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ CARNIVAL CHAMPIONSHIP HEATS DECIDED Over 600 entries, representative of the majority of the Dunedin and suburban primary schools, came forward for the Otago State Primary Schools’ Swimming Championships, which were commenced in the Municipal Baths last evening. The attendance was probably the largest ever seen at this meeting since its inception, and the large crowd of spectators which filled every inch of seating accommodation was treated to some keen and interesting racing. Times generally were a little slower than in former years, but the standard shown by the majority of the youngsters was nevertheless fairly good, especially in the sections for competitors under 13 years of age. Roy Geddes, swimming in the 50 Yards Breaststroke Championship for boys under 14 years, low'ered the record of 41 2-5 seconds established by his brother, Reg, in 1928, by fourfifths of a second, and in the 33 1-3 yards freestyle event for boys -a the same class A. Berland, of Macandrew Road School, was. timed to do 19 4-5 seconds, which is one-fifth of a second better than the previous recoi 1. The only final decided last evening was the girls’ diving. The finals of the swimming events will be swum off this evening.

The following abbreviations indicate the schools to which the competitois belong:—Dunedin North (Dn. SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ CHAMPIONSHIPS GIRLS’ HIGH SUCCESSFUL The girls’ secondary schools’ relay and life-saving championships were decided yesterday afternoon at the Municipal Baths, both events being won by the Otago Girls’ High School in the face of extremely keen competition on the part of the Dunedin Technical High School teams. In the Relay Race, for the Dunedin Secondary Schools’ Championship Shield, High School had a bare half-yard to spare, and only half a point separated the two schools in the life-saving event, in which the Life-saving Shield was at stake.

The president of the Otago Head Centre of the Royal Life-saving Society (Mr H. H. Henderson) was referee, Messrs D. C. Bannatyne and P. E. Matheson were judges, and Messrs H. H. Henderson and A. Gregg were timekeepers. At the conclusion of the races the shields were presented to the winning teams by Mr Henderson. The following are the results: — RELAY CHAMPIONSHIP (133 1-3 yards). Otago Girls’ High School (R. Jarvis, J. Clayton, B. Wrather, J. Thomson) 1 Dunedin Technical High School (C. Knowles, I. Purdie, A. Brown, G. Harris) 2 Waitaki Girls’ High School (K. Beardsmore, M.
