For the twentieth time in the 24 years since the competition was instituted, a Canadian has been crowned “ wheat king ” of North America at the international grain and live stock exhibition held in Chicago, Illinois. Since 1919 Canada has won 12 wheat championships, and no grower of the United States has carried off the honour since 1928. The new “king” ig John B. Allsop, of Wembley, Alberta—in the famed Peace River country north-west of Edmonton —where most of the wheat grown is of show class. He is a neighbour of Herman Trelle, four times winner of the trophy, and the only man to win it three years in succession. Allsop’s prize-winning exhibit was a peck of “ Reward ’’ wheat, which weighed 66.61 b to the bushel—a fraction under the alltime record of 671 b set in 1932 by his neighbour Trelle. Saskatchewan has now won this continental title 11 times, Alberta eight times, and Manitoba once. In addition to his show prizes, Allsop has received a cash grant from the Government of Alberta in recognition of his success and the distinction it has brought to bis province. It has won a place for itself in virtually every industry. Rightly directed and prepared, advertising has proved that it can return a profit to the advertiser. But advertising should always be considered as a business enterprise, and not as a magic formula for unearned success.
