A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the retirement is announced on superannuation of Ur Craig, C.M.G.. Comptroller of Customs, as from April 30. Dr Craig was appointed comptroller in 1923. He is »- E. R. Drummond, M.Y.0.. RN., who is about to take up the appointment of first naval member of the New Zealand Naval Board and commodore commanding the New Zealand station, is a passenger by the Mataroa which is due at Auckland on April 2i from London. , _ , _, Viscount Chaplin and Lady Chaplin, who have been on an extensive tour ol the South Island, will visit Napier and Lake Taupo before sailing for England from Auckland on April 30. Mr J. S. Scott, manager of the Invercargill branch of the Government Tourist Bureau, has been transferred to the Auckland office, and will leave tomorrow to take up his new position. Mr W. A. Pickford, of the Christchurch Bureau, will take charge at Invercargill after Mr Scott's departure. Our London correspondent, writing on March 23, states that Lady Hewart has been asked by the High Commissioner for New Zealand (Sir James Parr) to perform the ceremony of opening the New Zealand apple season. Mr li. Turner (representing the Fruit Board) has the matter in hand and is arranging for a suitable date. Mr V. C. Peters, conductor of the Christchurch Harmonic Society’s choir, is at present in Dunedin in connectmn with the forthcoming concert by the choir. Mr Peters has been appointed vocal judge for the Dunedin Competitions, and last night he was present at the annual meeting of the Dunedin Competitions Society. Captain J. S. Dee, of Dunedin, has recently returned to England from Shanghai (says our London correspondent, writing on March 23) after having had command of a new passenger vessel from the Tyne to the Chinese Government. He was a recent caller at the High Commissioner’s office to make inquiries about a new tug for the Auckland Harbour Board which is to be constructed in this country. To mark his appreciation of their technical service, the Minister of Finance, Mr J. G. Coates, entertained at lunch in Parliament House yesterday (says a Press Association telegram from Wellington) 13 departmental officers who, as a special committee, took part with the Minister in devising the intricate legislation dealing with farmers’ finance. The guests were Messrs Paul Verschaffelt (Public Service Commissioner), A. D. Park (Secretary to the Treasury), B. C. Ashwin (second assistant-secretary to the Treasury), G. E. Miller (superintendent of the State Advances Department), W. Ball (solicitor. State Advances Department), E. 0. Hales (Public Trustee), G. G. Rose (solicitor to the Treasury), B. L. Dallard (Under-secretary of Justice), Dr W. B. Sutch (economist, secretary), Professor H. Bclshaw (economist, adviser), Messrs J. R. Aicken (private secretary), J. Snell (controller of the mortgage division of the Public Trust) and J. Christie (law draftsman). The Minister referred to the excellent work of the committee, and paid a special tribute to the services of Mr Christie in drafting the legislation dealing with the vital financial problems affecting the rural industry.
