TARANAKI FLOODS

ESTIMATE OF DAMAGE HEAVY COST OF REPAIRS (Peb United Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, March 13. The damage to roads, bridges and semipublic utilities in portion of Taranaki immediately surrounding Mount Egmont during the flood of February 23 totals approximately £40,000, according to the estimates of the engineers to the seven county councils affected and the New Plymouth Borough Council. This does not include fairly extensive damage to the railway near Waipuku, numerous slips on the railway between Tahora and Heao, or damage to private property which is considerable. By far the greater part of the damage was caused by washouts and slips on the roads and damage to bridges, scores of which are affected and many washed completely away. The Main South road is still blocked at Tangahoe, south of Hawera, and the Main North road near Waitara, owing to bridges being washed away, but traffic can get through by detour routes. Rivers changing their course are responsible for a certain amount of damage, and much greater potential damage. The Okato district and the New Plymouth hydro-electric station were chiefly affected in this respect. The protective work for the latter is estimated to cost £4OO. Including private property, it is expected that the total flood damage will be between £60,000 and £70.000.
