It was announced recently by the chairman of the Administrative Committee that four times more traffic had passed through the Mersey tunnel since its opening than was anticipated. The tunnel is circular, and only the upper semi-circular half is used for traffic, the lower section being used partly for ventilation. But an indication was given by the chairman of the controlling authority that part, at least, of the lower half would probably have to be used so as to accommodate cyclists or some other section of the huge traffic with a new road. In the three months following the opening of the tunnel, traffic receipts had almost reached the sum that had been anticipated as a result of the first nine months’ working. River ferries in the past had carried 1,200,000 vehicles in a year, but' in the three months from the opening nearly 900,000 vehicles had passed through the tunnel
