Tobacco smuggling is becoming so prevalent on the Franco-Belgian frontier that “dazzle-guns” are to be used to circumvent it. These guns throw a beam of light over a distance of fourmiles that is go powerful that it will temporarily blind anyone in its path. Jack-knives were used 1000 years ago. In Germany, archaeologists have rust uncovered a knife with a folding blade which they estimate is at least 10 centuries old.
