CRICKET

THE CANTERBURY MATCH The final Plimket Shield match of the ■eason -will be' commenced at Carisbrook to-day between and Otago. Canterbury, has had a remarkably successful season in interprovincial games, and, although in an impregnable position co far as the Plunket Shield is concerned, the match should lose no interest on that account. On the contrary, it is expected that without the strain of the fate of the shield depending on the result, the players on both sides will be- more inclined- to play brighter and more attractive cricket than is sometimes seen in shield games. The Otago team appears to be the strongest combination fielded this season, the three new-comers to the team for this match being R. 0. Talbot, F. Toomey, and F. Kerr. The first-men-tioned player showed in the recent Southland match that he had regained his best form, his performance at Invercargill being one of the best seen there for a considerable time. Toomey, of Christian Brothers, has reolaced Clark as wicketkeeper, aad F. Kerr, who played for the Waitaki Boys' High School and North Otago last year, has shown his ability already in club cricket. The New Zealand Cricket Council has confirmed the nominations of Messrs W. Butler and G. M'Queen as umpires for this match.
