THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam” DUNEDIN, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1864. Shiping Intelligence.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

PORT CHALMERS— February 15th. SHIPPING SUMMARY. Exclusive of the numerous fleet of vessels of small tonnage t which , are at this season employed in the conveyance of wool and timber from minor ports along the coast, there have been fifty-five arrivals at Port Chalmers during the past month, this number being rather below the average. ... As many as 38,000 sheep have during the time been landed at Port Chalmers, upwards of 14,000 being landed within two consecutive days . . . The number of cattle landed has been about 1300. . . . 1206 persons landed in the province during the month; 1810 since the beginning of the, year. Tlie departures have been 1366 within the month, or 2059 since the beginning of the year, making a balance of 160 against the province for the month, 249 for the, portion of the year which is past. . . .

About 450 children assembled in the Octagon, and moved in procession to some ground near Anderson’s mill, Water of Leith, CRICKET. TWO OF THE ALL ENGLAND ELEVEN v. ELEVEN OF OTAGO. Yesterday a rather novel match was played, two of the All England team, Grace' and Tarrant, playing, a picked eleven of Otago. In addition to these Mr Caffyn wa s allowed to field for them, and as will be seen the English pair were victorious in fact. The match was of course single wicket, and by this means the apparent advantage of the Eleven was greatly reduced. In single wicket, as many of our readers may not be aware, no hits behind the level .of the stumps, no byes, leg byes, or slips are allowed", and the ball after passing the Wicket becomes dead. The Otago players have not been accustomed to play the slashing style necessary to make runs in this way, and their deficiency was made painfully manifest by their score of 7. In addition to this, every run is in fact equal to two runs in double -wicket, the bowler’s crease having to be reached and the distance retraced to make, a single. At the same time the superiority of the English play was very clearly shown, for with two fielders only they disposed of their opponents for seven, whilst with a field of eleven scattered all in front of the wicket they managed, to get eight in the first and sixteen' in the second innings. ... It was supposed that the match would have been played out, but it was not, and therefore by the first innings victory remained with the Englishmen. . . .
