FIGHT FOR LIFE
HAUPTMANN’S PLANS CONVINCED OF INNOCENCE FLEMINGTON, February 14. (Received Feb. 16, at 8 p.m.) Mr Reilly, defending counsel, who spent 10 minutes with Hauptmann in his cell t6-day, stated that the prisoner, who is engrossed in plans for the fight to be made, to extend his life beyond the week beginning March 18, “is pretty well broken up by the sentence. Hauptmann is still convinced of his innocence and is visibly shaken. He says,.*How could anybody believe that !—the father of a child like my little Mannfreid—could kill anyone else’s baby? Mr Reilly indicated that the attorneys were prepared to exhaust every measure of the law to set aside the verdict. A world-wide appeal for new evidence will be broadcast and a “ Hauptmann appeal ” that will receive contributions from all sources will be . established under the trusteeship-of some bank.
