A LIFE-SAVER ATTACKED • i LEFT THIGH RIPPED OPEN SYDNEY, February 15. Darcy Lorenz, aged 20, a life-saver at Austinmer, had his left thigh ripped open by a , shark or a big fish as he shot the breakers .to the beach. Despite the pain of the wound, which was eight inches long and three inches deep, Lorenz managed to walk up the beach and then collapsed. He was sent to the hospital and operated on. It is believed that Lorenz was brushed by the fin of a shark, but it is suggested that a swordfish may have been responsible. , WARDER TO STAND 1 TRIAL BRISBANE, February 15. John Thomas M'Quade, aged 39, a prison warden, was committed for trial at Rockhampton on a charge of murdering Phyllis Muriel Reiger. Detective Albeitz alleged that in hospital on January 10 M'Quade said to him: “She gave me a drink and as soon as I drank it I saw black. I grabbed her by the throat, and when I let go she was dead.” A message received on January 16 stated: A sensation occurred at Rockhampton by the discovery of a young woman’s almost nude body in a car at the rear of a ,city boarding house. The vi.tim, who had been .strangled, has been identified as Phyllis Reiger, aged 23, a very popular girl. She yras seen in the company of a man last night, and the man later went to his boarding house , and. became violently ill. He is now under police surveillance.
