NOTES ON THE RACING
. ' JUBILEE SONG UNLUCKY "• ' •:■ '(Special to Daily Tjmeb) / -...'...', ■ WANGANUI, February 2, ," . Sir Spear, scored -again in the hurdles without ; uiuch difficulty. He.: lay. in behind earlyj but-jumped to the front at the five furlongs. Headland •looked; like causing some danger over the last '\ half, but Sir Spear drew away from bim : : at the last!* fence. Conference, who-: finished third, lost, bis chance of doing any better Jby a bad jump at the.five furlongs. .; It" was; not difficult to :pick' the form bf horses in; the Maiden Race, and- Eara was, much better backed than Dawn Princess; They led all .the way; and had the finish to themselves; "Windscreen went with them to the turn, and ; then weakened. :' In a flat-out finish Eara just beat Dawn Prince*, with ; Spearshpt running paist. Windscreen for third.: The tsvo:year-old race introduced a new find promising colt in'the Wotan, whose performance was most praiseworthy. Wotan moved back as the barrier rose, -and -with the" exception .of Chief Lady, who .played up;„ he "the last to leave the mark. "Prevail was also* slow on the jump away, but voitre sent her along in a" hurry, and she was soon within reach of the leaders.- Wotari, on the other hand; was given: time' to. settle down, but, having found his feet, he soon became prominent. With a dashing run round the turn/Prevail had the leaders beaten entering the straight, but she had no chance with the finishing run of Wotan. Hunting Scene was a .moderate third. • - Glenvane, in the back seven, again failed td-do better/than third, although he ran a creditable Tace; .The Ark was always in front, and: with Jubilee Song made the pace from' Onewhetu," Waste-; land, and-Black. Man, withVGlerivane, on thefence, in behind 1 Wasteland. Jubilee Song received a bad' bump entering the straight and 'fell back,. The Ark .drawing away for a,decisive win over. Wasteland; who never left, the rails. Glenvane was a-good third, just beating Onewhetu, and then came Hunting Queen,; Flamingo, and Jubilee Song.' The winner provides a good' illustration of "the luck necessary especially '', over seven furlongs. He was unsighted oh, Thursday, but; getting clear early on this occasion, he was always the winner; Jubilee Sprig was unlucky. Glanvane could not' quite hold to the early pace,'but'he .finished well. Wasteland ran with her usual consistency, and Flamingo was showing up at the finish.. .j ~ ; ';..-.. i Palni-won the» Hack Plate all the way; Ten furlongs proved'quite far enough for her, but judicious riding by R. Reed went a long way towards, success. She sprinted early, slowed up down the back, and then sprinted home,"with the result that she had her opponents doing their best too early to., suit them. Pango was her most dangerous opponent at all stages. He lay inbehind her throughout; but the slowing up' of the. pace caused him to be checked; and then the sprint, home djd not help him. In the four-horse race for the Earle Stakes the favourite; Speed, trailed" the pace-makers, Davistock and Tiger, .Gain, to tfie- straight, and' then chauenged .to run home'a comfortable winner The pnjy surprising thing about the result was the dividend retutned by the winner. '..'{. . Cadlahd imade a, solid bid to; overhaul Porotiti inthe open sprint, but the latter was travelling fairly comfortably at the post. He is racing much more solidly since being gelded. ! Gold Gleam, from,.No. .1. made a big attempt to win all the way in the concluding event, but Arena, Always handy, just caught him in a hard finish;" ; '
