THE CENTENARY CONTESTS NEW ZEALANDERS WELCOMED (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, January 24. (Received Jan. 24, at 10 p.m.) The New Zealand athletes who will compete in the centenary games contests on Saturday and Monday were welcomed to-day by the Lord Mayor and the chairman of the Centenary Council. The New Zealanders have engaged in vigorous work with the English, Scottish, Finnish and interstate teams. All the New Zealanders greatly impressed in the trials. A highlight on Saturday’s programme will be the mile run, in which Craske (England), Barwick (Tasmania), Backhouse (Victoria), M'Lachlan (New Zealand) and Colman (Victoria), all champions, will meet.
