BRITISH BY-ELECTION
THE WAVERTREE CONTEST CURIOUS POSITION ARISES LONDON, January 24. (Received Jan. 24, at 11.50 p.m.) A curious position has arisen in regard to the candidature of Mr Randolph Churchill for Wavertree by-electiou, where he is opposing the National Conservative candidate, Mr James Platt, on the India issue. The executive of the India Defence League, which was formed to oppose the White Paper proposals, decided actively to support Mr Churchill's candidature and send league speakers on his behalf. Lord Lloyd, the Dnehess of Atholl, and several other peers and members of the House of Commons have offered to speak and Mr Churchill will address a big demonstration on the’ eve of the poll. A serious view of this action is taken in official Conservative quarters and there is some talk of the withdrawal of the party Whip from “diehard ” speakers. It is also possible/that several members of the Cabinet, contrary to the gen end practice, will speak on behalf of Mr Platt; .although, as the Conservative majority last election was 23,973, the seat is not considered to be in real danger.
