NATIONAL ART GALLERY
BUILDING OPERATIONS WORK WELL IN HAND (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, January 24. The manner in which subscribers to the National Museum and Art Gallery have carried out their promises to date, considering the intervening depression, must be considered as reflecting credit upon them. Public subscriptions, including the proceeds of the Confidence Carnival held in Wellington in 1933, totalled £70,300 at the end of November, 1934, when the amount outstanding was £21,850, which is made up of £5228 to come from the general public, £3OOO from the Wellington City Council, which has subscribed £12,000 of the £15,000 promised, and the proceeds of'the sale of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts property in Whitmore street, Wellington, .which will be determined when the sale is effected.
While there is still an appreciable amount outstanding it is evident that with the Government’s contribution of £IOO,OOO the financial position need present no insuperable difficulties. The building is well in hand and there is no reason why it should not be completed by the due date. The interior work is progressing and soon the housing of the art and other treasures of the Dominion will be possible.
