BURNS ANNIVERSARY

To all Scotsmen, the anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s poet is one that is ever celebrated. It was on January 25 in 1759, that Robert Burns first saw the light of day in a little cottage in Ayr. Burns, from humble birth, rose to be ranked with and sought after by the best in the land. His literary star—and there have been many in the firmament of Scotland—has from the beginning, with a strong, brilliant light, far outshone all others. His lov e songs, “ 0 a’ the Airts, “ Bonnie Wee Thing,” “ To Mary in Heaven,” and many others have endeared him to all human hearts, and that wonderful parting song, “Should Auld Ac-

quaintance Be Forgot,” has become universally known. Little wonder is it then that Burns holds such strong ties oj affection over all true Scottish hearts, and the Dunedin Burns Club will do honour to his “name by holding an entertainment worthy of the occasion. The club has secured the services of Mrs Wilfred Andrews, of Wellington, and Miss Alva Myers, fresh from her success in Australia, will also be one of the outstanding performers. Messrs Arthur Macdonald. George Mearns, and John Kennedy need no introduction to Dunedin audiences, and should receive a warm welcome. Variety will be lent by elocutionary items by Misses Nell Warren and Leonore M'Kenzie, violin solos by Miss Ethel Wallace, and national dancing by Miss Doreen Wheeler’s party, and instrumental music by the Dunedin Pipe

Band. The address for the occasion, “Burns and the Burns Country,” will be v in the hands of Mr W._R. Brugh. The programme is advertised in this issue, and patrons are promised a pleasant apd profitable evening’s enjoyment.
