PALMERSTON Picnic at Hampden A picnic was held at Hampden on Tuesday under the auspices of the Palmerston branch of the Women’s Institute. A sports committee consisting of Mesdames M’Gregor, I. The third evening sports meeting conducted by the Palmerston branch of the North Otago Amateur Athletic Association for the silver cups was held in fine weather on the Palmerston Show Grounds on Wednesday night. The results were as follows; — Senior 220 Yards Handicap.—First heat: N. D. Murray (6yds) 1, G. L. Day (scr) 2. J. W. Whitfield QSyds) 3. Time, 25sec. Second heat: R. J. Dalgleish (22vds) 1, D. S. M’Knight (4yds) 2, T. G. Pearson (18yds) 3. Time. 25 2-ssee. Final: D. S. M’Knight 1, G. L. Day 2, N. D- Murray 3. Time, 25 2-ssec. M’Knight won with a good burst on the tape. ■ , Junior 75 Yards Handicap—First heat; W. M’Leod (2yds) 1, J. Fletcher (scr) 2. W, Corrigan (syds) 3. Time, 8 2-ssec. Second heat: A. M’Leod (Iyd) 1, J. F. Adams (3yds) 2, J. Heyes (6yds) 3. Time. 9 l-ssec. Final: J. Fletcher T, W. M’Leod 2, A. M’Leod 3. Time, 8 4-ssec. Fletcher won by a yard, with about a foot between the others. Three Mile Handicap.—T. C. Pearson (scr) 1, J. W. Whitfidld (60yds) 2, D. B. Martin (200yds) 3. Time 16min 16 2-ssec. Pearson overhauled the held with a mile to go. and, running strongly, won easily from Whitfield, with Martin well back third. , Junior One mile and a-half Handicap. B. Johnson (60yds) *1, J. F. Adams (75yds) 2, R. Johnson (45yds) 3. Time, Bmin 9 l-ssec. This was the most interesting race of the evening. With two laps to go the winner went out and got a good break from the rest of the held, and, running strongly, won by 15 yards, with Adams and R. Johnson having a good tussle for second place.
