LORDS HAPPY
NEARLY HUGGED EACH OTHER LONDON, December 20. As a climax to the outburst by the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Hewart, against the Judicature Bill, calm descended on the battlefield of the House of Lords after nearly three hours' attack and counter-attack. ' Lord Hewart had said that the impression would be given that Lord Justice Slesser was to be prevented from presiding because he had been appoinvod to the Bench by a Labour Government. The Lord High Chancellor, Viscount Sankey, said that Lord Hewart's speech had amazed him, but he proposed to adopt the suggestion that no present Lord Justice should be affected by the Bill.
" Let's have peace and get on with our work" said Lord Hewart. Upon which Lord Sankey, leaving the woolsack, dashed across the floor, his robes flying,, and seized the hand of Lord Hewart, whom he had treated like a barrister cross-examining a witness. The long tense grip introduced a charming scene, the chief protagonists almost embracing each other. The Minister of War, Viscount Hailsham, not to be outdone, wrung Lord Hewart's hand. Sir Claud Schuster, Lord Sankey's private secretary, repeated the performance, the peers beaming self-consciously. As Lord Sankey, preceded by the "macebearer and attendants in court dress, permitted himself a further han 1clasp before leaving the Chamber, it was like an additional scene to Gilbert's " lolanthe."
