WHIPPET RACING
DUNEDIN CLUB’S MEETING The Dunedin Whippet Racing Club held a successful meeting at the club’s track, Tahuna Park, on Saturday afternoon. Owing to the fact that a meeting was held at Invercargill last week, a number of Dunedin dogs were not nominated for Saturday’s meeting, and the number of competitors was smaller than usual in consequence. The class of dog that competed, however, was up to standard, and the fields included such champions as Silver Tom, Border Queen, and Star Master. A total of 28 dogs competed in a programme of six events. There was a fair attendance, and the track was in good order. The principal event was the .Mount* ney Memorial Cup for dogs of 221 b and under. Two heats and a final were run by the competing dogs, and Border Queen won the trophy in a very easy manner. The cup was presented to the owner of the winner (Mr W. Veitcu) by the president of the club (Mr Ji. Payton). The following are the results; —
Novice Handicap (175 yards).—F. Tanner’s Chance 1, W. H. Turner’s Cashier 2, C. N. Unwin’s Our Rose 3. Pour competed. Won by half a length, with the same distance between second and third. Time, 10 4-ssec. Juvenile Handicap (175 yards).—C. N. Unwin’s Our Rose 1, G. Little’s Phnephora 2, E. Little’s Pitz- Palu 3. The only starters. Won by a length, with a length and a-half between second and third. Time, 11 3-ssec. Mountncy Memorial Cup (light-weight handicap, 175 yards).—First heat; W. H. Turner’s Wynfall 1, W. Veitcb’s Border Queen 2, P. Tanner’s Joy Days 3. Won by half a length, with a similar distance between second and third. Pour competed. Time, 10 3-ssec. Second heat: Mrs C. A. Hensleigh’s Hush-a-Byc 1, Mrs W. Guthrie’s Whistling Wind 2. The only competitors. Won by a long head. Time, llsec.
Final. Border Queen 1 Wynfnll 2 Whistling Wind 3 Hush-a-Bye also competed. Won by a full length, with half a length between second and third. Time, llsec. Open Flat Handicap (175 yards).— Mrs J. S. Algie’s First Flight 1, Mrs W. Guthrie’s Biplane 2, J. J. Berry’s Star Master 3. Four competed. Won by half a length, with one length between second and third. Time, 10 4-ssec. Maiden Hurdle Handicap (175 yards, over five flights of hurdles). —F. Tanner’s Chance 1, T. Hodge’s Pit-a-Pat 2, W. H. Turner’s Cashier 3. The only competitors. Won by two lengths, with the same distance between second and third. Time, 13 l-ssec.
Novice Hurdle Handicap (175 yards, over five flights of hurdles). —W. H. Turner’s Wynfail 1, G. Kemp’s Chenwood 2, Mrs J. S. Algie’s First Flight 3. Night Flight was the other competitor. This dog had a lead of several lengths when he struck the last hurdle and although thrown to the side of the track, recovered his balance and finished. But for this mishap Night Flight would have finished in first place. Wynfail won by four lengths, with a length between second and third. Time, 11 4-ssoc. Silver Tom was over the stipulated weight and could not compete.
