FINE FINISH IN THE CUP

(Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, December 16. Gas Mask was a pronounced favourite for the Trial Plate, but after having every chance fourth was the best he could manage. Night Gem and Azevedo soon took charge, leading Gas Mask and Horotiu to the straight. Horotiu finished strongly, beating Might Gem by half a length. Azevedo was a neck away, with Gas jHask and First View close up. Haere Touu was the early leader in the Bangor High-weight Handicap, but Chidden took charge from Importance, Haere Tonu, Solwit, and Jerry Boy along the back, with Hostile last. Jerry Boy followed Chidden to the straight, where Chidden collapsed, Jerry Boy beating Haere Tonu by a length, with Solwit over a length away. Then came Hostile and Chidden. The feeble effort of the last-named was surprising. The winner i 6 trained by W. Scobie, who was unable to ride on account of a broken arm received at Riccarton when his horse fell in the Brush Hurdles last month. The horse was ridden to success by J. M‘Laughlin, a visitor from Auckland. The Gleudore Trot saw Argolis in front early, with Colonel Bogey, Audrey Dillon. Golden Square, and Buddy handy, while halfway through Our Fay and Mystery Yet were also going well. Argolis was not troubled to hold his place, winning by three lengths from Our Fay, who beat Mystery Yet by half a length. The winner is trained on the course, and his success was popular. The five starters provided a great race in the Hororata Cup. Great Star was the early leader, but Ranelagh soon joined him, with Sam Smith, Some Shamble, and Silver Sight handy. Rauelagh took charge at the five-furlong post, but Great Star joined him again at the far turn. Ranelagh retired at the entrance to the straight, when Sam Smith also weakened. Great Star _ was 'then joined by Some Shamble and Silver Sight. The last-named, under pressure, cut in under Great Star’s neck, causing him to be checked. The stable mates. Silver Sight and Some Shamble, provided an exciting finish, Silver Sight winning by a head. Great Star was Svo lengths away. J. H. Prosser, owner and trainer ot Great Star, lodged a protest on the ground of crossing, but it was dismissed. Riptide led off in the Novice Stakes, with Rose of Tralee, Golden Dart, Epris, and Teresina next. Orris joined in along the back, where Golden Dart met serious interference. Orris moved up at the home turn, joining Riptide and Rose of Tralee at the entrance to the straight. Orris then drew away, beating Rose of Ttalee easily, with Golden Dart and Riptide not far away. Orris won in convincing style. Golden Dart put up a fine effort after his trouble. Epris was disappointing. As a result of an inquiry into the interference suffered by Golden Dart L. Pratt, the rider of Epris, was suspended for three months for careless and dangerous riding. , , ... Grecian Prince soon took charge in the Racecourse Hill Handicap from V\ ise Choice and Quietly, with Cleaner last. Cleaner moved up a little further on, and followed Grecian Prince to the straight. Then Wise Choice made an effort, but Grecian Prince beat her by a length. Cleaner was a head away, and Quietly a neck further back. Grecian Prince' is at the top of his form just now. In the Snowden Trot, Mystery Yet took the lead after half a mile, with Buddy, Self and Carrageen next. Carrageen was second along the back, with Buddy, Self, Flying Helen. Argolis, and Full Hand not far away. Mvstery Yet and Carrageen drew away at the home turn. Mystery Yet broke in the straight, Carrageen beating Mystery Yet easily. Argolis was three lengths away and Full Hand fourth. Theatin was soon in front in the Sundown Hack Handicap, followed by Wee Musk. Elbanor, Top Rank. Gold Cross, and Golden Dart. The last-named again seemed to meet a check about the same

place where he encountered trouble earlier in the day. Theatin led to the straight, where Top Rank, Wee Musk, Gold Cross and Golden Dart all threatened danger, but Theatin won by nearly a length, with Top Rank and Wee Musk in the places.
