GREAT ADMIRAL
IN NAVY FOR 88 YEARS There has been unveiled in the naval yard at Halifax, Canada, a tablet in memory of Sir I'rovo Parry Wallis, K.C.8., Admiral of the Royal Navy, and one of the distinguished sons of this seaport city. Sir Prove was born in the naval yard in 1791, of a family with naval traditions. He joined the navy as a midshipman at 1."?, was a commander at 21, and won commendation for his part in the famous'engagement of H.M.S. Shannon with the United States ship Chesapeake in 1813. In 3 857 Sir Provo was a vice admiral and six years later admiral. When he reached "the normal age of retirement, by special order-in-couueil he was retained on the active list of the navy for the remainder of his life—and he lived to be 101. He served with the fleet 88 years.
The story of this grand old sailor ranks with the story of Samuel Cunard, founder of the Cunard Line, another native of Halifax, who brought honour to his city and to Canada.
