INTERCLUB CHAMPIONSHIP The Interclub Championship games we're continued on Saturday in ideal weather, the greens in most instances being much keener than usual. Only two clubs were successful in gaining the maximum points (12)— Kaikorai and West Harbour—and these two clubs now share top position with 36 points each. Caledonian won four sections out of five, gaining 9 3-5 points, and occupies third position on the list with 33 3-5 points. Following close are Balmacewen 33 points, Otago 32. and Caversham and Roslyn 30 each. Waikouaiti, which played, a' prominent, part in the competition last season, has not yet broken its duck. / ' , The following table gives the results of Saturday's games and the total points scored to date by each club:— _ . FOUR-RINK CHAMPIONSHIP The Four-rink Championship games are creating more than usual interest and are Being keenly followed by big banks ot spectators. I Perhaps the most interesting game played this week was that between Dunedin and Balmacewen on the lattel s green on Monday night. The green bad been carefully prepared and waa m_ excellent order. Balmacewen and JJunedin were in the same section last season and Balmacewen proved the winner although the two clubs did not meet, and this fact probably gave added interest to Monday night's game.. Although Dunedin finished with a winning margin ot 13 points, it was only in the final stages that it secured a serviceable lead. With four or five heads to play it was anyone's came, Balmacewen having: a lead of a few points. The outstanding feature of the game was the fine play, or the Balmacewen skip, Ferguson, whose re-, markably accurate drawing saved round about a dozen points on three beads alone. Gardner was' Ferguson's' opponent and he also gave a fine demonstration of accurate bowling and the result of the game, 17 points all, was a satisfactory conclusion to a fine display of bowling. Hogg (D.) went down somewhat heavily to Buchan (8.),' who registered ,23 points to his opponent's 13. The game between J. Hutchison (D.) and D. Bennie ,(B.) was keenly fought,,but the Dunedin 'rink' finished' strongly arid -established 'a lead of six.points,(2s—:lft). The scoring was rather one-sided in the game between," Nelson (D.) and Macdonald (B,),.the former taking the lead after the first head and steadily drawing away to win by, 27 points to,lo. ; The following are the results of the games played for the week ended November 24: ;■ v;-..,:.?. .••+.•.■ ~ '-K=:.v Section A.rr-Roslyn 81, Mornington.\76; Caledonian 89, Anderson's Bay. 59;. - St. Clair 115, Logan. Bowlers are reminded that entries'for the Dunedin Centre's Christmas Tournament close on Friday, December 14. Thjs tournament eaters for a considerable number of local bowlers Who like to spend Christmas, at home. The tournament is popular, and entries have shown an increase each year. Each player will get at least five games, and those entering, will be able to enjoy their Christmas dinner, as the morning game has been cut out this year—play starts at 2.30 p.m. on Christmas Day. Four bowls- are to be used by each player. Entries for'the New Zealand Bowlipg Association's annual tournament close at Auckland on December 8. Dunedin will be represented by at least five rinks at this tournament, and it;is on the cards that another two rinks will make the trip. Dunedin will have two rinkg away—J C Rigby,' A. Gregory, H. Gardner, and J. Hutchison, and I. Grant, R. Hanning, J. Doolan, and T. Mackie. Tw r o rinks will go from the Caledonian, and possibly three, one from St. Kilda, and possibly one from Balmacewen. THE BALMACEWEN GREEN Deab "Jack," —In your bowling notes of November 22 the only Saturday match you commented on was Balmacewen and Caledonian You apparently support the "Growl" regarding the heaviness of the Balmacewen green, which you attribute to the grass not being cut lower.. An inspection of the green would show that it is not so much the grass not being cut lower that makes the green so much heavier, especially compared ■ with the Caledonian green, but, the committee is seekinf to stimulate the weed, and it so happens at this particular time of the season, coupled with the natural harness of the soil, the weed is seeding and inclined to be hard. However, quite apart from that position, while Balmacewen members have indulged in a " Growl" as well as the Caledonian players, the fact remains that the Caledonian won one section ou Balmacewen green, but on their own green where the conditions are perfect, the Balmacewen won both section and actually only one. riuk out of the six was down, and that only by a very small margin. We appreciate comments in your notes, but when commenting on a particular match why not refer in general terms to the whole game, and not only to one specially detrimental feature? —I am, etc.. Secretaby. PERSONAL : By the death of Mr E. T. G. Falconer, the Dunedin Bowling Centre and the New Zealand Bowling Council have lost an able administrator and wise counsellor, and bowlers generally have lost a warm-hearted friend and genial companion. Mr Falconer had not enjoyed good health for the past few As a member of the Otago Club over a long period of years he had proved himself in the frout rank of Dunedin bowlers and on more than one occasion the Singles Championship went to his credit. Ho was a member of the Otago Club's rink which won the New Zealand Rinks Championship in the Dominion tournament in Dunedin in 1018. On the administrative side ot bowk Mr Falconer from the outset had demonstrated his ability and was always scrupulously fair in all his actions. After two terms on the executive of the Dunedin Bowling Centre he filled the offices of treasurer, vice-president. and then, in 1931, president. He had been a member of the New Zealand Bowling Council ninec 1933, and both in the Dunedin Centre and on the New Zealand Council his services will be keenly miaied. The esteem in which he was held by bowlers and by the community in Ti'iiprnl «;is demonstrated by tin- largo gathering of mourners which followed the remains to the Anderson'B
