A motion of sympathy - was passed with Mrs J. Smith in her recent bereavement. Miss Finlayson, of "Apple Cross,” Puerua, gave a talk upon native birds and bush plants. * * * The November' meeting of the Owaka Valley branch of the W.D.P.U. was pre-
sided over by Mrs J. Morris. The rofl call was “ What would you do with £s.' The senior competition was “A laundered traycloth,” Mrs Morris being successful. Tile junior competition was “ Something made from cardboard,” the winning article being a bag made by Miss Irene Morris. It was decided to give another Christmas tree this year for the children of the district.
The Taieri Mouth branch held its third birthday party this month, Mrs Sinclair (president) presiding; Bouquets were presented to Mrs Drake (provincial president). Mrs Sinclair, Mrs Graham, Mrs Dickson, and the secretary (Mrs J. Barber). The following programme was enjoyed:—Vocal solos by Mrs and Mr Mieklejohn and Miss M'Lay, of Dunedin; dialogue by Misses K. Marshall and F. Harraway; one-act play by Mesdames Sinclair, Graham,. Whalan, Barber, and Miss Joseph; chib swinging, Miss K. Marshall; playette by four junior members; recitation, Mrs Graham; Maori songs by the company. Mrs Drake complimented the branch on attaining its third birthday, and spoke of the aims of the Women’s Division. Congratulations were received from Mrs Grant (West Taieri), Mrs Elliott (Milburn-Clarendon), Mrs Inglis (Glenledi-Akatore), Mrs Caldwell (Brighton Institute), Mr Henry (vicepresident of the local branch, Farmers Union), and Mr Grant (West Taieri). The birthday cake (which was made by Mr R. Harraway) was carried on to the stage by Miss H. Simpson, where Hislop, who iced the cake, lit the three candles, and the secretary blew them out Mrs Drake; then made the official cut. After supper an enjoyable dance was hqld.
