BOWLING

EMPIRE GAMES TEAM (Special to Daily Timfs.j WELLINGTON, November 14. After having represented New Zealand at the British Empire Games in August, three bowlers, Messrs G. Carter (Auckland), G. G. Pollard (Auckland) and W. W. (Hamilton), returned to the Dominion to-day by the Ruahine. The team won four games out of nine, defeating Wales, Rhodesia, Australia and Hongkong, The playing conditions were very different from those in. New Zealand, Messrs Pollard and Dilliear said. The Cumberland turf, of which the greens were composed, gave a heavier surface, and they had difficulty in finding touch. Another factor was that the greens were all longer than those in New Zealand, being either 126 feet or 132 feet as against the regulation 110 feet in this country. The English team which won the competition had played magnificent bowls, and it was safe to say that the four best players in New Zealand could not have won under the conditions existing. Mr W. E. Airey, of Auckland, who was secretary of the New Zealand bowling team which toured England in 1928, also returned by the Ruahine. Messrs H. Grocott and L. Keys, of Auckland, the other members of the team, will return to New Zealand shortly. FOUR-RINK CHAMPIONSHIP Kaituna v.
