The Gore Racing Club’s spring meeting opened in fine weather, and attracted a large attendance. The track provided good going. 'Sungcnv went but favourite for the Pukerau High-weight Handicap, but after being one of the leaders nil the way Palatinate beat her at the finish. Moheygr.au ■ won all the way in the Waiwera Hack:Handicap, and finally stalled off Tizzy and 1 Jacobin. Unseen faded but after being well iip in the early stages. Red-Rhcer was taken out of the Spring Handicap; was favourite from the outset; of ;tbe betting, and looked a winner as he headed Hast Link ag they straightened for home. Signaller then put in a claim, and, racing ,past the leader won going away. Steeton was unlucky. She was third _,as they entered the back stretch on the' rails, but then got sent back to last at the far turn. ■She came on to finish fourth, and was probably the only one that might have troubled the winner. Kemal Pasha was pulling hard in the early stages, and would have done better if allowed to run along. Great Shot and Totolomai made a poor show. Wrackette finished well, in the Labour Day Trot, and got up to beat Lynwood, who had broken up at the start. Bay Duke made a one-horse race of the Novice Handicap, and Cherry Queen led all the way in , the Stewards Handicap, but had nothing to spare at the finish. Rocks Ahead put in a bad break when running with the leaders in the Mataura Trot, and Sergeant Dallas lost ground at the start. Bingen Wrack won nicely, but was perhaps a bit lucky to beat Sergeant Dallas and Rocks Ahead, who got boxed on the rails in the straight. Tauraraai was made favourite for the Charlton Hack Handicap. He got badly away, and collapsed when racing alongside Osculate at the far turn. Osculate won well at the finish. Amy Johnson, who was on the rails, appeared to get second, but the verdict went, to Acla. During the day £13,921 10a went through the totalisator, as against £11,288 10s last year. • , PUKERAU HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of lOOsovs. Eight furlongs and a-half. 4/6—S. G. Blatherskite got a rough passage in the Pukerau High-weight Handicap. F. Shaw has a three-year-old brother to Severe in training at Wingatui. Kemal Pasha was pulled about a lot in the early part of the Spring Handicap. • Lochlaggan looked particularly well at Gore, but a bit on the big side. The race should work a big improvement m her racing condition. Last Link made a bold bid in the Spring Handicap to the home turn, where The Smuggler had his measure. Signaller then raced away fi'otn the pair of them. There was a good deal of crowding on the first day at Gore and it caused interference which, although accidental, had the same effect as if deliberate. Both The Smuggler and Signaller are trained by A.’ M'Kenzie, but it is said that the stable backed the wrong horse iii. the Spring Handicap. Steeton was running third on the rails in- the Spiring Handicap when she got cut out and had dropped back last at the far turn. She did well to come on and finish fourth. ,# ■ Jacobin ran a good race in the Waimea Handicap and .may do better on the. .second day. Unseen, who ■ had, as good a chance on paper as Jacobin, commenced to fade over a furlong from home.

Tizzy started favourite, for the' Waimen Hack Handicap. She was in pursuit of Moneygrau all the way, but had no chance of heading him. It did not Jook a good trial, for the Stewards’ Handicap. On his Dunedin Guineas form Tai&amai appeared to. hold a good chance in the Charlton Handicap, but he collapsed abbut three furlongs and' a-half •; from home. ; ■ The name Isaacs has been bestowed on a colt by Lord Warden from Rachael. If there happens to be a. full brother it will no doubt be christened Cohen. The scratching of Spiral for the New Zealand Cup has left L. J.'Ellis free to make fresh arrangements, and it is understood he will pilot Sweet Agnes in the two-mile race next' month.

As a rsult of his success in the Wainui Handicap on Saturday, Might is liable to a rehandicap for the New Zealand Cup, in which he has 7.0, as is Copyist in the Stewards’ Handicap for his win in. the Shorts Handicap, hie present weight being 7.7. Havering has been recommended by' the chief stipendiary steward, Mr C. Gomer, for the harrier schooling list, as a result of his bad manners in his recent races. This may mean his permanent relegation to hurdle racing, for which he has shown some aptitude. Journal, the winner of the Caulfield Cup, is a four-year-old gelding by Treclare from Enore. He is owned by J. T. Cush —Silver Scorn is owned by F. T. Cush. Farndale, who ran second, is a three-ycar-old colt by Curialis —AU Chatter.

Limond is having a wonderful season. Following on his great record at Randwick, Solarium won the Mitchelson Cup for him at Ellerslie, while at Trentham on Saturday, Spiral, Severe, and Might scored three more important successes on the flat, following on a hurdle win by Chile. ■Journal, who won. the Caulfield Cup on Saturday, took p'art in the exciting finish for the .Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick, Waikare beating him by a head, with Nightly a head away. All that remains now is for Nightly to win the Melbourne Cup and the Randwick defeats will be amply atoned for. Journal, then a three-year-old,-won four races last season, among them being one over a mile and five, furlongs_ at Randwick, so he had excellent credentials as a stayer.

An incident believed to be without precedent in the history of racing in America occurred at Saratoga Springs last month. The first three to finish in a race were all disqualified, and the fourth, fifth, and sixth horses placed first, second, and third respectively. TBcre were only six starters. There was a general scrimmage during the race, and the stewards acted after deliberating for half an hour. No action was taken against the jockeys concerned. The scratching,of Spiral, and Burnish for all their engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting will be regretted by many South Island sportsmen. Their breeder and owner, Mr G. M. Currie, races his horses freely .at the principal North Island meetings, and the appearance of his-colours at Kiccarton would have been specially welcome at a period when the progeny of his successful sire, Limond, have brought so much fame to the Dominion by their doings in Australia. There was some good fortune in the win of Severe in the Wellesley ' Stakes on Saturday, as Legatee put ,up a great effort to be a close second, after meeting interference. They bad met previously at Wanganui, where Legatee won, a week after Severe had scored at Marton. Severe has brilliant speed, and she will get some more money. She represents a very successful cross, being by Limond from the Absurd mare Drastic, whose dam, the imported mare Drax, by Spearmint. produced Spiral, the winner of the Wellington Handicap. .Severe is being raced on lease by the Awapuni trainer. J. P. Co vie. and in due course she will return to the stud of her breeder. Mr G. M. Currie. One of the strangest races ever decided was run at Folkestone early last month, ihcre were- four competitors for the
