ALMS BOXES RIFLED. The Rev. A. W. Bedford, rector of Mickleham, the parish in which Box Hill is situated, has some striking comments to make in answer to the suggestion that village churches should be left open during week-days. He writes in his parish magazine: “The pundits who preside over 'vergered ’ cathedrals and well-served town churches press for open churches in villages. They would change their tune if they faced our difficulties. Alms boxes are constantly rifled; this we can deal with. Portions of ancient brasses are removed; devout tourists lunch in the church on wet days and leave relics behind. “ Recently a fine carpet for the chancel, valued at £2O, was bodily removed. This must have meant a motor and probably assistants. If anybody has been offered cheap a roll of red pile carpet with outline design and black edge they might report to the police—it is probably ours! ”
