Mr Birkinshaw has been approached and has consented to stand, but he has yet to be approved by the Labour Party. It is stated, however, that there is little or no doubt that Dr Birkinshaw will be selected and will stand. Dr Birkinshaw was a member of the Labour Party in England while still a university student. He was on active service in France at'the age of 16, and later served with the Royal Air Force in Arabia and also spent some months with the French Foreign Legion in Arabia. He holds the coveted MedaUle d’Honneur Avec Glaives en Bronze. He came to New Zealand in 1930.
