THE Otago Daily Times. “ Inveniam viam aut faciam.” DUNEDIN, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1863.

Shipping Intelligence.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

PORT CHALMERS—October 12th. Considerable complaint is being made that, although all the appliances for lighthouses at Cape Saunder ß and the Heads' are understood to have been received from home, nothing i s apparently being done towards-the erection of the buildings, or in any other way to forward the undertaking, the importance of which to numerous interests'in the Province can scarcely be over-estimated. ... A considerably increased number of small crafts are now carrying cargo to the Molyneux for transhipment to the steamer Tuapeka, which continues to : ply with regularity along both branches of the Clutha as far as the Tuapeka Junction. » . Speaking of the discovery of copper ore at Moke Creek, the Wakatip Mail says:—"While on the subject of mining, we may mention that the report of the copper lode at Moke Creek turns out to be an established fact, a survey having been made by the mining surveyor of the district, Mr Wright. The scene of the discovery is a gully, the reef cropping out on each side, and passing under the bed of the creek, which flows between ', and the percentage of copper is estimated at from 25 to 30 per cent. ..." No further intelligence of a definite character hag yet been received concerning the new diggings near' the Taieri River. The public excitement was fully maintained.yesterday, and a large number of persons left town for the new rush. The stores of the various dealers in miners' tools presented a busy aspect during the. day, and .shovels, picks, and tin dishes were in great demand. The coaches which left in the morning took full.. complements of passengers, but by far the greatest. proportion of those proceeding to the new diggings preferred accomplishing, the.short journey on foot. A good- many drays were loaded and despatched for the ground, so that there need.be little fear of a scarcity, of. provisions, . - : ,■,; .. I

Mr Farley, .the enterprising. proprietor of Vauxhall Gardens, has enclosed a considerable area of the ground as a.rabbit warren. At a great expense rabbits have been procured from Victoria and places in'New Zealand, and although a great proportion of the. animals died before reaching. their home, a sufficient, number has been preserved to hold out a prospect of stocking the warren. Mr Farley may be able, while' accomplishing his own more direct purposes, to. .effect'something in the cause of acclimatisation,; and we would recommend i him to add to; ;the inhabitants of.his enclosed ground pheasants, of which a • suitable', number for breeding purposes could be easily.'procured from Auckland, in which place these, birds haye, in a few years, become exceedingly numerous. ' "''' ; '■■■'■ v "" v . To-morrow the rowing inatcb between the Elswick and Scrutineer crews,' for LIOO a : side, will take place. The course is five miles —from the Dunedin Jetty to Pelichet Bay and back. A great deal of excitement prevails at the Wakatip relative'to Dr Hector's discovery, and already the local journal speculates on the establishment "of a commercial port on the West Coast., -Not content to-wait for Dr Hector's revelations, parties are being organised to trace out the track of the explorer, with the hope of following it down to' the' coast. .
