The first claim under the new Damage to Property Compensation Act. i" Britain, which provides for claims arising out of the Irish civil war, was heard at Cork Circuit Court recently. James Barry, Ellen Bradley, and Margaret Barry, bakers and grocers, of Cork, sought £4OO compensation for bread and groceries requisitioned by the Irish Republican Army in July and August, 1022. The claim was rejected in 1924 by the Recorder of Cork on the ground that the late Patrick Barry, a son of a member of the firm, was at the time an active member of the Irish Republican Army. Mr O'Connor, the State Solicitor, opposed the recent claim on the same ground,' arid asked the court to hold that there was connivance. Judge O'Connor held that the claim was proved, and said he would recommend an award of £4OO. The world crop of tobacco is about 4,000,000,000 pounds a year.
