BALCLUTHA The report of the South Otago Bowling Centre, to be presented to a meeting of delegates on Saturday night, states that the centre had a very successful season, although' there was a slight decrease ■ m membership through the Tapanui Club transferring to the Gore Centre. Receipts amounted to £Bl 2s lid and expenditure to £SO Is od, leaving a credit balance of £3l Is 6d, which included a balance from the previous season of £24 13s sd. The local theatre was well filled on the occasion of the South Otago High School s annual concert. The programme was ot a High order of merit, and included several playlets, in which the acting of the pupils was highly appreciated. The part singing, under the baton of Mr .W. R. Scott, and the displays of physical drill by the bigger girls, were also good. At a conference with carriers held in Balclutha Mr Preston, the Transport Board (No. 9 Licensing Authority) gave some sound advice to carriers when dealing with farmers- It would be a _ good plan he said for. the carrier to charge le& to the farmer, and arrange with the latter to supply goods for the return journey, and so save the cost of running the lorry empty one way. The idea would be for the farmer to help the carrier while at the same time helping himself- ' . . . ... A largely-signed petition protesting against the Borough Council’s scheme for an airport was presented to the Mayor (Mr D. T. Fleming) on Wednesday night. IThe signatures were those of ratepayers only. His Worship stated yesterday that he would not call a special meeting of the council to consider the matter for a few days yet. . The Molyneux River, which has been high for a week past, rose again to-day and is now running bank high. The lock at the south end of the town has been closed.
