Messrs Hammond and M’Arthur, Ltd., : Wellington, forwarded a cheque for £lB ' out of the proceeds of a recent art union, which had been directed by the Minister of Internal Affairs to be used for the relief - ; of distress at Portobello. — Received. A letter was received from the Rev. Leslie B. The building ; would face the harbour, and would be of wood, concrete and brick. It would be under one roof and would cost about £ISOO. Considering that the committee had practically nothing, he wondered ; if the council would grant a building : permit without charge.—lt was pointed | out that the charge for the permit would be, £3 10s.—Cr Hellyer moved that the request be granted, but Cr Nyhon moved as an amendment that it should be declined on the grounds that all such applications should be treated alike. They would be creating a precedent if they granted the request.—The amendment was carried.

Mr W. Brockman, secretary of the North-East Harbour Ratepayers’ .Association, wrote drawing attention to the nomenclature of streets in the district. For instance, he said, there were two Princes streets, and his committee suggested that street names be reviewed and altered where necessary.—Gr Hcllyer said, regarding the two Princes streets, that one was in Macandrews and the other in Wharfdale township. Nevertheless, they were within a stone’s throw of each other.—lt was decided, before taking any steps to have street names altered, to ask the Ratepayers’ Association to suggest an alternative name for one of the - Princes streets. A letter was received from the District Public Trustee concerning the question of access to the estate of the late Mr J. G. Dick. The writer wished to know whether the council was prepared to open up access to the property from the, Wickliffe Bay side.—lt was decided to reply that when the road was required the council would ho prepared to put in order the six or eight chains of the present road from Wickliffe Bay. Mr A. G. Lewis, Portobello, wrote requesting that the hill, portion of the road leading to his property should be metalled.—Referred to the engineer. ‘ A letter was i-eceived from the Qtago Education Board stating that the board was opening a school at the Papanui Farm settlement. Settlers had pointed out- that paddocks were not fenced off from the road, and .the children going to arid from school would have, to pass through herds of cattle. Children from the lighthouse would have to walk nearly a mile where’ there was no fence on either side of the road. It was hoped that the council would; take steps to have cattle kept off the roadside.—A petition, on the .same matter, urging the council to have the Cape Saunders road fenced from the Lighthouse Reserve to the Maori boundary, was received from Mr .David Smith and-nine other settlers of the district.—lt was decided to reply that it ivas iiot the council’s duty to fferice the road.
