TRAFFIC OFFENCES

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—‘l notice in a telegram from your parliamentary reporter, dealing with road accidents, that fatalities attributed to the absence of lights are still frequent, accounting for over 10 per cent, of the total. , I wonder if our local traffic inspectors have observed this particular paragraph and made a mental note of the fact that several protests by various people in Dunedin have been voiced through the medium of your columns about the frequency with which cyclists are observed riding about our streets in the hours of darkness without lights. This offence against the traffic laws is' getting far too common in Dunedin. I have occasion to drive about the level areas of our city fairly frequently, and it is but rarely that I travel from one side of the level area of the city to the other at .night without meeting one oi’ more cyclists without lights. Several days ago I passed no fewer than three between the railway overbridge in Anderson’s Bay road and the Portobello road turnoff. 1 have several times passed three or four in quick succession in Bay View road. South Dunedin. I have also had other motorists make the same complaint to mo quite frequently of late. In the cyclists’ own interests, something should bo done to see that the law is observed a good deal more closely, and I would be interested to hear if the Otago Motor Club or our local traffic inspectors intend to do anything about the matter.—l am, etc., Ex-CYCLIST. Dunedin, September 20.
